Changing Your Life One Day At A Time

Changing your life around - sounds like such a big deal doesn't it? There are so many positive life changes we can make - whether it's career, relationships, exercise, nutrition, finances, becoming self-employed, personal and professional growth or even spiritual refinement. Some of you may be looking to change one particular area of your life; while some of you may be looking at total life changes - seeking to improve all areas in one synergistic go!

In most cases you've spent years - perhaps even decades - developing your particular lifestyle and habits. Now that the scent of change is in the air and changing your life seems imminent, you start wondering if you're up to the task!  Your mountain of change is looming. How do you climb it? The answer, of course, is one day (and step) at a time.

Thank goodness for small mercies!

Changing Your Life - Dream or Reality?

"To believe in something, is to move towards what you believe in."

~Masaaki Hatsumi

We all have desires, dreams, and aspirations. And we all like to believe that one day we will actually be living the life we envision and strive for.

How do we know that we're not merely fantasizing? How do we know if our dreams are serving as actual blueprints to our future or perhaps are just a smokescreen distracting us from the real changes that need to be made?

The answer is simple.

Your intentions for changing your life are real if you're actively stepping towards them - preferably every day.

Changing Your Life Harnessing The Power of a Day

"If you can fill the unforgiving minute; with sixty seconds worth of distance run..."

~From the Poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling

We all have an exceedingly life-changing power at our immediate disposal. In fact, we have 365 of these life changing powerhouses available to us a year.

It's the life-changing power of a day.

All of the advances in technology and the incredible life changes around us - from the simplest to the most complex and elaborate - have been brought into existence utilizing this one, singular power.

The life-changing power of a day.

Is there anything that contains more creative energy, potential and power than this 24 hour gift? There's nothing!

Yet, how successful are we at harnessing this power? How good are we at using this power to consciously create the inspired life changes we're after?

More often than not, the power of a day runs away with us; rather than us seizing and running away with it! But it doesn't have to be that way. At the end of the day, when all is said and done, it's our life. It's our gift. We should have a conscious say in how we want to use our creative energies and talents.

We can create, and live, as we will.

Changing Your Life Through the Power of Repetition and Routine

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.”

~Aristotle

Everyday we get up, go through our familiar morning routine, go to work, come back home, go through our regular afternoon/evening routine and then slip into our nighttime routine, after which we find ourselves back in bed.

Then we get up the next day and do it all over again.

Whatever falls into our daily routine gets done on a regular basis. Whatever doesn't, usually gets postponed, rejected or ignored. If we take care to plant selected seeds in the fertile soil of our everyday routine, a future we can live with will arrive soon enough.

This is the power of a day – and it never lies. Sow on a daily basis and you will reap. Fail to sow on a daily basis and you may very well weep. The power of everyday either works for you or it works against you – but it is always working.

Using the power of a day to your benefit is key to changing your life for the better.

Changing Your Life By Just Doing It?

If and When were planted, and Nothing grew."

~Proverb

Sometimes it isn't lack of courage, ability or strength that prevents us from stepping into the inspired life changes we want. Sometimes it isn't even our lack of knowledge or skill-set that's holding us back. Sometimes the reason we can't or don't change is so simple that it wants to make me cry out of frustration just thinking about it!

Sometimes the reason we fail to realize the life changes we're after is simply because...

...we - just -  don't - do - it.

We may know for a fact that if we do a little bit of X on a daily basis, we'll eventually reach our goals.

But we just don't do it.

We may know for a fact that doing a little bit of Y on a daily basis, will put us in good stead for the future we envision.

But we just don't do it.

You may know that changing your life may be as simple as incorporating a simple healthy habit into your daily routine.

But it just never happens.

Our life, it seems, has a life of its own! Despite our best intentions - and what we believe are our best efforts - when life takes hold of us all power of intention evaporates into thin air. It gets drowned out, lost and forgotten. Until the next time we try to reassess and assert our conscious intent towards meaningful life change - only to have the same thing happen all over again.

Who would have thought that simply 'not doing it' could be the foremost reason for not changing our life for the better?! We rarely see it that way, of course, since the mind is always ready with a quick excuse (did I say that?) -  I mean ... absolutely rational and convincing explanations as to why we aren't following through.

As Walt Kelly once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Rather than harnessing the power of 'just do it' to change our life, we usually end up harnessing the equally powerful 'just not doing it'. It doesn't have to be more complicated or frustrating than that.

What If Changing Your Life Was More About Surrender Than Willpower?

"Progress never moves in a straight line. It's a spiral pathway, now going, now returning, holding on and letting go, winning and losing, giving and receiving."

~Dennis Augustine

Life wants us to grow, to expand, to take things to the next level, to evolve. And it has wired us accordingly. We are built for growth, expansion, and evolution. Yet, growth means exchanging the old for the new – and we often find ourselves reluctant or unwilling to let go.

We struggle. We procrastinate. We excuse. We postpone. We rationalize. We deny. We bargain. We 'explain away'. It seems we will do just about anything but what's really being asked of us: to surrender an old, familiar part of ourselves, in exchange for the unfamiliar new.

If you want to incorporate a new activity into your daily routine for example, then the cherished self who's attached to the old routine must 'die' - in order for the new routine to be born. It isn't enough to force the change of routine through sheer power of will.

This can only take you so far.

Surrender is the real force behind lasting life change - not willpower.

Changing Your Life Moving Forward

Almost any significant life change you want to make depends on you harnessing the power of a day towards your aims. It doesn't have to be the whole day, it doesn't even have to be a major part of the day - but it does have to be every day.

Every single day take that small step towards your goals.

Changing your life will require surrender more than willpower. You'll have to put the ego aside to allow your deeper intentions to realize and unfold. It won't be easy. But it will get you there!
